The Greek government once more has extended the deadline for bids to finance, construct and operate the new Kastelli airport project in Heraklion, Crete. “The binding financial offers for the new international airport of Heraklion, Crete, in Kasteli will be submitted in late July”, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said while giving a speech at an event on Thursday. Initially, the deadline for the project, budgeted at 850 million euros was set for February, but then postponed to June 27. According to Reuters, a source familiar with the matter said the tender had been pushed back because the terms on which investors will submit their bids were not ready yet. According to the Greek PM, the project will bring multiple benefits to many sectors of the island’s economy, besides tourism. The airport is set to be operational in 2018, and will replace the current Nikos Kazantzakis airport in Heraklion.
