girl_gazing_sea_greece_2Over 80 percent of Greeks will not go on holiday this summer, according to the annual nationwide survey conducted by the General Consumer Federation of Greece (INKA).

The federation’s survey, in which 869 consumers participated via telephone interviews during June 3-27, said that only 174 individuals said they would take a summer holiday this summer.

Over 80 percent of those interviewed said they are not planning a vacation yet, nor do they believe they will eventually go on holiday this summer.

The survey revealed that the reasons Greeks will stay home this year are: financial (77 percent), job and income insecurity (13 percent), professional obligations and other reasons (10 percent).

INKA also showed that out of those that will take some time off, 42 percent would reside at a privately owned summerhouse, 36 percent at a family or friend’s summerhouse and only 22 percent would stay at a hotel or rent a room.

Moreover, the duration of Greek family vacations are also expected to drop in 2016. According to INKA, 42 percent of Greek families will take a holiday for four days, 26 percent for seven days, 20 percent for 10 days, 11 percent for 15 days and only one percent for 20 days.

Some 80 percent of the Greeks prefer to holiday near the sea, while vacations at mountain destinations are gaining some ground compared with previous surveys as this year they gathered 20 percent.

INKA also calculated that the minimum cost for a 15-day holiday for a four-member family in Greece adds up to some 2,550 euros.
