Crete_Omada_DA team of divers from the Crete Rescue Team based in Agios Nikolaos took to the sea on Tuesday, during an underwater cleanup of the seabed on the sidelines of Ecoweek Crete 2016.

Founded in 1999, the Crete Rescue Team is made up of 18 volunteer divers from all walks of life who offer their help in emergency response situations including mountain rescue, ground search and rescue, urban search and rescue and sea rescue, evacuation and first aid missions which are a result of natural disasters, fires, earthquakes, floods and accidents.

crete_106_0545On Tuesday, the divers — with the support of the Pelagos Diving Center — cleaned the seabed of Ammos Beach at Agios Nikolaos pulling our debris, tyres, tin containers, nets and much more.

One of the main missions of the team is to educate and train youngsters and residents on how to react emergency situations, participating in Lasithi Region events and activities.

“The team is made of local professionals from various sectors who are also divers and who dedicate their free time to educating and contributing to the environment but also to the community,” team leader Dimitris Koulougousidis told the Greek Travel Pages (GTP), adding that support is always welcome.
