Organized by the city’s Youth and Sport Organization (OPANDA) with the support of the Attica Region, the series of events includes concerts by local artists in all genres including rebetika, fusion, pop, jazz and classical by everyone from Dimitra Galani, Mode Plagal, Vassilis Papakonstantinou and Onirama to the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, the Big Band and choir. Children’s theater shows and workshops as well as the traditional Karaghiozis shadow puppet theater will entertain kiddies during the summer evenings in the Greek capital. “We hope these events will offer a different more light-hearted and optimistic tone to the daily life of Athens’ residents and visitors this summer,” Athens Mayor Gorges Kaminis said during the presentation of the event program. Meanwhile, in efforts to raise awareness and offer support to needy social groups through the “Oloi Mazi Bouroume” goodwill initiatives program, organizers invite participants instead of a token ticket fee (at certain performances) to bring long-lasting food supplies. The 2016 Summer in Athens events will come to a close in September with the 6th Athens Open Air Film Festival featuring dozens of film screenings at Athens’ open air cinemas.
