The countdown to the August 15 holiday in Greece has begun and hotel comparison website Trivago has revealed the most popular destinations searched online by Greek users. The searches were carried out from March 1 to August 1 for the August 11-16 period.

August 15 is one of the biggest religious celebrations in Greece after Easter and Christmas.

This year Chania in Crete is the top destination for the August 15 holiday for Greeks that searched on Trivago. Halkidiki was last year’s number one August 15 travel destination.

Next preferred destinations for this year’s August 15 holiday are Parga and Naxos. Last year Parga was in the 10th place and Naxos was the 15th most preferred destination.

Sivota and Skiathos are in the fourth and fifth place, respectively, and are followed by Skopelos, Rhodes, Nafplio, Tolo and Rethymno.

It should be noted that two of Greece’s most popular destinations, Mykonos and Santorini, are both absent from the Greeks’ preferences this year, according to Trivago’s list.
