Mykonos Island Cyclades Greece

Greece has been named and voted as the best country in the world for 2016 by Condé Nast Traveller UK readers, AFP reports.

Despite the ongoing refugee influx and the country’s financial woes, holidaymakers still have a soft spot for Greece, flocking to its shores for some sea, sun and fine food.

Greece has been voted number 1 followed by Italy and the US. The top 10 list is completed (in order) by South Africa, France, Spain, India, Australia, Thailand and Mexico. Full results appear in the October issue of CN Traveller.

Greece appears to be gaining even more ground following a series of terrorist attacks in neighboring Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt, its main tourism competitors, prompting vacationers to change plans for safer shores.

Meanwhile, the Greek islands also feature in the top three island choices of CN Traveller’s online Readers’ Travel Awards poll. The Greek isles come after Maldives in first place, and are followed by Spain’s Balearic Islands, Sicily, Seychelles, St Lucia, Bali, Koh Samui, Malta and St Barth’s.
