Chief resilience officers, representatives of international organizations, NGOs, companies and research institutions from across the globe are meeting with Greek experts in Athens to exchange views, make proposals and work together towards the identification of tools that will assist cities in dealing with the new challenges posed by emerging vulnerable populations. Experts will share know-how and experience from cities like Paris, Amman, Ramallah, Medellin, Los Angeles and Montreal, that have had to deal with social change resulting from incoming populations. “Athens wants to hear the views and experiences of the seven cities participating in the network. The recent refugee crisis has more than ever highlighted the key role cities play towards the creation of new synergies and models to promote peaceful coexistence, solidarity and mutual respect,” said Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis. “At the forefront of global debate is the need for cities to ensure social inclusion and to identify long-term policies that will ensure their resilience,” he added. “The event aims to bring together some of the most influential experts on migration in order to provide cities with the information and tools needed to help an estimated 19.5 million refugees living within their limits,” explained Michael Berkowitz, president of 100 Resilient Cities, an entity pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation and dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the 21st century physical, social and economic challenges. “In short, supporting cities in tackling this crisis is the best way to alleviate the pain and suffering of some of the world’s most vulnerable populations,” Mr Berkowitz added. The Athens Network Exchange: Cities and the Global Migration Crisis is being held within the 100 Resilient Cities of framework activities. Press here to see the 3-day program.
