NeliosGreek hotels marked an increase in the number of online bookings and turnover in the second quarter of 2016 compared to the same period last year, according to Athens-based digital tourism experts Nelios.

Despite a disappointing start in the first four months of the year, Greek hotel enterprises marked a 41.5 percent increase in direct bookings — primarily from the US and UK — with takings up by 40.9 percent. Nelios cites the improved results to last-minute bookings.

The number of online reservations by US travelers rose in the second quarter by 30.65 percent compared to the previous year and by 82.8 percent against the first quarter of 2016. Bookings from UK holidaymakers, meanwhile, recorded a 19.12 percent growth against the same period in 2015 and a 32.63 percent rise compared to the first quarter of 2016.

Turnover surged by 40.9 percent against 2015. The Russian market led the way with the highest average booking value up by 45.27 percent compared with the second quarter of 2015. Switzerland followed with a 38.98 percent rise.
