In its second year, the event will take place on Santorini on October 7-9 and offer breathtaking views and challenging routes to fans of swimming and running. The GNTO is offering its support in an aim to promote sports tourism and establish the “Santorini Experience” as a major sporting event in Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games and world sports history. “This form of tourism operates as a competitive advantage of Greece to be chosen by individuals and groups of visitors who are interested in attending or participating in organized sports activities and training programs”, the GNTO said in an announcement. The event, organized by the Municipality of Thira and also held under the auspices of the Hellenic Swimming Federation, includes a swimming competition from the island’s volcano to the old port of Thira and running competitions for children and adults at the Caldera (the path that connects Oia with Fira) and the indoor sports hall of DAPPOS in Fira. The swimming routes have been designed by the Federal Technical Coach of Swimming Nikos Gemelos and the event sees the participation of the Silver Olympic medalist and World Champion in open water swimming, Spyros Gianniotis and top names of the Greek national open water swimming team such as World Champions Kelly Araouzou and Antonis Fokaidis, the European Champion Giorgos Arniakos and the Champion Dimitris Negris. Moreover, the “Santorini Experience” event will receive the international promotion of FOX Sports TV network of FOX Networks Group, which is participating in this year’s event as the Official Broadcaster. The event is a collaboration between the Municipality of Santorini, the Municipal Sports Cultural Environmental Organization of Santorini (DAPPOS) and Active Media Group.
