Sea Tourism ‘Green’ Measures May Lead to Greek Ferry Fare Hikes by GTP editing team 19 October 2016 written by GTP editing team 19 October 2016 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 7 Greek ferry fares are set to increase by 27 percent if the government implements environmental measures, according to Greek Shipowners Association For Passenger Ships (SEEN) president, Michael Sakellis. Speaking at a day event on “Designing the Coastal Shipping Network” in Chania, Crete, on Monday, Sakellis said that “[as a result] of the new measures being discussed, the expected cost per passenger will come to 5.4 euros (currently at 2.2 euros) while the increase in the average ferry fare will amount to 27 percent”. According to Sakellis, the industry is set to examine environmental measures for Ro-Pax fleets, which if put into effect will affect the speed and routes carried out by ferry operators as well as the cost. He added that extra charges cost each ship an estimated 150,000 euros annually. “It is certain that the cost of travel will increase considerably directly or indirectly as will the number of ferries running the same routes,” he said. Sakellis noted that coastal shipping is being unfairly implicated for its environmental performance considering the fact that it contributes only 20 percent to global GHG emissions (Greenhouse Gas). He underlined that the government must take effective measures to keep the industry afloat particularly in view of the fact that ferries are the only means offering transportation to remote islands.
