giorgos_pavlidisGiorgos Pavlidis, the regional governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, died of cancer early on Thursday, October 20. He was 60 years old.

His funeral will take place at 4 pm at the Agia Sofia church in Xanthi.

Pavlidis was a lawyer who also served as Prefect of Xanthi from 1998 to 2010.

In 2004 Pavlidis initiated the Cross-border cooperation network of neighboring Greek, Bulgarian and Turkish prefectures, based in Orestiada. Nominated by the Union of Prefectural Administrations of Greece, Pavlidis was also the head of the Greek delegation to the Congress of the Council of Europe from 2007 until 2010. Pavlidis was also the chairman of the union of 11 prefectures situated along the Egnatia Highway, known as “Egnatia – Tourism”, which was launched for tourism development purposes.

Pavlidis has been honored by many organizations for his activity in Greece and abroad.
