The regional airports on Santorini, in Chania and Heraklion, Crete, and on Rhodes were among the worst airports in Europe, failing to provide travelers with basic amenities including seats, clean bathrooms and temperature control. Santorini’s airport came first on the list, followed by the airports in Chania and Heraklion. Rhodes Airport was voted the fifth worst in Europe.

Visitors to the site voted for its 2016 Airport Survey selecting 10 of Europe’s poorest performing airports based on overall airport experience.

The list this year also included London’s Luton (fourth place) and Stansted airport (ninth), France’s Beauvais-Tille International (sixth), Berlin’s Tegel airport (seventh) and Rome’s Ciampino International (tenth).

Factors determining the voters’ decision included lack of air conditioning, massive crowds and long lines, lacking information services (at Santorini and Heraklion airports), chaotic security processes and inflated prices for food and drink at Chania airport.

Dirty or broken bathrooms, lacking or no air conditioning, chaotic parking and leaking roofs, highly priced or limited food choices as well as long distances between terminals were among the determining factors in the decision-making process.

Meanwhile, in related news, German airport operator Fraport said last week that it will invest over 400 million euros by 2021 for the upgrade and expansion of facilities at the 14 Greek airports it operates, which includes those on Santorini, Rhodes and in Chania and Heraklion on Crete.
