Speaking at an event in Thessaloniki on Friday, Tawfik informed professionals and journalists that the route was originally to launch this past June, but Egyptair’s administration decided to temporarily postpone the plan due to the economic instability in Greece, but also Egypt. Among other things, he pointed out that the airline is looking into launching flights between Cairo and Kavala Airport. Citing data, Tawfik said that Northern Greece inhabitants are keen to travel to Egypt. Tourism authorities in Egypt are making efforts to boost the number of tourists visiting the country, which have continued to drop since Egypt’s 2011 revolution. In 2010, Greek tourists to Egypt amounted to 50,000, a number that plunged by 50 percent or 25,000 arrivals in the 2015/2016 period, the regional director of the Egyptian Tourist Office for Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Malta, Emad F. Abdala, informed. Moreover, Abdala said the Egyptian Tourism Organisation will allocate some $63 million in tourism marketing and promotional actions abroad. According to reports, when asked to comment on the issue of security in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, Tawfik and Abdala said that the situation has normalized as many European airlines have reinstated flights to Egypt.
