According to the data, in total 53,637,249 passengers passed through Greek airports last year compared to 48,811,600 passengers in 2015. Moreover, the number of flights in Greece increased by 3.8 percent to 461,161 against 444,249 the previous year. Domestic flights amounted to 189,710 and international flights to 271,451, rising by 1.2 percent and 5.7 percent respectively. “We continue dynamically in 2017. The passenger traffic record achieved by the Greek airports is to the benefit of the national economy”, HCAA Governor Konstantinos Lintzerakos said. In December 2016 alone, the number of passengers in the country’s airports increased by 14.6 percent to 2.18 million. The airports with the most traffic were those in Athens (1,349,145 passengers), Thessaloniki (422,999 passengers), Heraklion (89,974 passengers), Chania (74,658 passengers) and Rhodes (60,975 passengers).
