Five properties on and around Athens’ central Omonia Square have been slated for renovation or reconstruction in order to re-open as luxury hotels, Greek daily Kathimerini reports. Tapping into an ever-growing interest in the Greek capital as a major tourist destination, large hotel operators are moving full speed ahead to ensure a part of the action. Hotel units are set to open this year on Agiou Konstantinou, Pireos, Stadiou and Ermou sts as well as on Kolokotroni Square. In the meantime, media report that the Athens Ledra on Sygrou Ave, which declared bankruptcy last year, is expected to go to an Asian buyer. Zeus International and US-based Wyndham Hotel Group are finalizing the details for the operation of a second hotel in Athens after the 273-room Wyndham Grand Athens on Karaiskaki Square, which opened last year. In 2018, Marriott is set to return to Athens as operator of the newly renovated Metropolitan on Syggrou Ave – owned by the Chandris Hotels & Resorts. Reports also place French company Boisee Finances as operator of a new hotel on Patission St opposite the Archaeological Museum of Athens. Home Holdings, the new owner of the Hilton Athens, is already planning the implementation of an ambitious program.
