After hosting a group of tourism professionals/cycling tourism specialists from Sweden to position Epirus as a leading thematic tourism destination, the region is already seeing its first bookings from Sweden involving cycling tours for the 2017 tourism season. The familiarisation trip, which took place in October in cooperation with the Swedish travel agency Trawell, gave the Swedish professionals first hand insights into the array of activities that Epirus offers such as cycling tourism. During the fam trip, the Swedish professionals travelled more than 80km on bicycles every day, while visiting the region’s secret corners in Zagorochoria, Metsovo, Parga, Tzourmerka and Ioannina. The bicycle tours also gave the visitors the opportunity to sample traditional Epirus cuisine and experience the region’s hospitality and culture through visits to museums, attractions and archaeological sites. The Swedish tourism professionals were accommodated at the Epirus Palace Hotel & Conference Center Hotel, which was a sponsor to the event. Epirus tourism representatives plan to continue the effort and will soon travel to Sweden and meet Swedish travel agents to promote more of the area’s thematic tourism options.
