Fraport Greece is ready to take over management of 14 regional airports on March 15 and held a day event on February 13 in order to present its ambitious plans. The event, which focused on issues of operation and training, was held in Athens and is part of a series of similar informative events across Greece. Representatives from all relevant fields participated, including the Civil Aviation Authority, the Greek police, fire brigade, Air Force, customs authorities, civil protection, National Weather Service, National Flight Coordination Authority, Hellenic Duty Free, airlines and International Air Transport Association (IATA). “Our goal is the development of airports to better serve these destinations and Greece in general, always in close cooperation with local communities,’’ said Alexander Zinell, CEO Fraport Greece. ”We strongly believe in the growth potential of the airports and the destinations they serve. This momentum and the chance to become an integral part of Greek tourism’s global success are the two reasons we decided to invest 1.2 billion euros and commit to further investments of over 330 million euros in the first four years of the concession for the development of the airports,” he added. In the meantime, the fate of the country’s remaining 23 regional airports not on Fraport’s roster is unknown. The infrastructure ministry appears to have halted modernization and upgrade works on 23 regional airports until they are transferred to the jurisdiction of the country’s new privatization fund.
