A fee imposed on the airline tickets of travellers departing from all Greek airports will be set to a flat rate of 12 euros per passenger, regardless of their final destination, according to an amendment tabled in Parliament on Wednesday by Transport Minister Christos Spirtzis and Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos.

To date, the fee passengers had to pay — known as the “modernization and development airport tax” (widely referred to as spatosimo in Greek) — depended on their final destination. It was 12 euros for passengers traveling from Greece to airports in Schengen countries and would reach 22 euros for passengers travelling to countries outside Schengen.

According to the amendment, the new fee will be imposed once the 14 Greek regional airports begin operating under new management and will remain until November 1, 2024. The fee will then drop to a flat rate of three euros per passenger for departure from all airports in Greece.

Moreover, the spatosimo will now be charged on children passengers over two years old. Until today the fee was imposed on children over five years of age.

According to the amendment, the new unified spatosimo air passenger fee will create “healthy competition between airports”.
