Laws, Regulations & Policy Theresa May Manifesto to Jeopardize EU Nationals’ Free UK Travel by GTP editing team 20 April 2017 written by GTP editing team 20 April 2017 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 6 Seeking a stronger mandate to negotiate Britain’s departure from the European Union, UK Prime Minister Theresa May announced snap elections for June 8 on Tuesday, as well as a number of pledges in that direction including restricting free travel of EU nationals within the UK. “When people voted to leave the EU, they did vote to end free movement as it has been – they voted for us to have control of our laws so we are not subject to the European Court of Justice (ECJ),’’ May said according to the Mail Online. “We will be ensuring we negotiate the best possible deal with the EU – a deal which will cover the various issues that people are really concerned about in terms of ensuring control of our borders, control of our laws, control of our money,” she said. Brexit, the result of last year’s referendum, has already impacted travel including forcing airlines based in the UK to move their headquarters to the EU and sell off shares to European nationals if they wish to continue running major routes across Europe. May’s manifesto aims to commit the Conservatives to ending EU free movement, pulling out of the single market and of the ECJ while making it harder for peers to block Brexit. “It’s important to make sure we get the strongest possible mandate to deliver the best deal with our European friends,” she said.
