The three-day event is organized by the Yacht Club of Greece and the Nautical Club of Skiathos, with the support of the municipality and the island’s cultural society, and aims to establish the island as a leading sailing and yachting destination. As part of its social responsibility program, the event this year promotes the the Safe Water Sports non-profit social initiative which works towards raising awareness about safety matters related to recreational water activities and sea sports with emphasis on safety standards and the prevention of accidents. Aiming to promote the sport – one-on-one competition involving two boats – organizers have included two additional events: an introductory seminar on match racing and “The School Project” targeted towards Skiathos’ school-age youngsters wishing to learn the basics of sailing. Besides being the event’s major sponsor, the five-star Skiathos Palace Hotel just 10km from Skiathos Town on a hillside overlooking the Blue Flag beaches of Maratha and Koukounaries, will be hosting the judges, athletes and journalists visiting the island for the event. Repeatedly lauded for its services, the Skiathos Palace has been awarded the ISO 9001:2008 (hotel services), ISO 14001:2004 (System of Environmental Management) and ISO 22000:2005 (System of Food Safety Management) quality certificates, as well as the “Green Key” and “Travelife” eco distinctions.
