Laws, Regulations & Policy Strikes in Greece Prompt UK Travel Advisory by GTP editing team 23 May 2017 written by GTP editing team 23 May 2017 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 6 The United Kingdom’s Foreign Office recently issued a travel advisory alerting British tourists about strike action in Greece. “There are regular strikes, sometimes called at short notice that can cause disruption to public transport (including air travel and ports), as well as road networks and borders,” the advisory says, adding that demonstrations take place regularly in central Athens, some in reaction to developments in Greece’s negotiations with its international creditors. The British government advisory also says that “terrorist attacks in Greece can’t be ruled out” and mentions that a small explosive device detonated in central Athens outside the offices of Eurobank on April 19 that caused no injuries. Moreover, the UK Foreign Office mentions that in 2015 and 2016 there was a dramatic increase in the number of migrants and refugees arriving on Greek islands. “At present there are no reports of any specific risks to British nationals visiting these islands or at border crossing points,” the directive says. Extensive reference is made to the capital controls imposed on Greece, with the British Foreign Office giving instructions on how the Britons can carry out their transactions in the country.
