Athens International Airport (AIA) served four percent more passengers in May to 1.87 million, compared to the same month last year.

“This outcome was formulated by the diverse evolution of the domestic and international markets,” AIA said in an announcement.

International passengers enjoyed robust rise of 7.3 percent, whereas domestic passengers were below 2016 levels (-1.9 percent). Greek residents presented an overall growth at the level of 12 percent, while foreign residents presented an overall slight drop of one percent. Both Greek and foreign residents showed an increase in their international traveling, by 19 percent and 3 percent respectively.

Overall, during the period January through May 2017, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 7.23 million, exceeding prior-year levels by a robust 7.5 percent, solely attributed to the sharp increase of the international sector by 13.1 percent, since the domestic market experienced a capacity driven decline of -1.7 percent.

Both Greek and foreign residents presented an overall growth at the level of 12 percent and two percent respectively, with both seeing a healthy increase in their international travelling, by 26 percent and 6 percent respectively.
