Within its social and environmental awareness activities, the Creta Maris Beach Resort recently participated in the cleaning process of the archaeological site of Kastri, located at the port of Hersonissos near Heraklio on Crete.

Creta MarisThe Creta Maris Green Team, employees and guests of the Creta Maris Beach Resort actively supported the initiative of the Heraklion Ephorate of Antiquities, which coordinated the cleaning operation. The aim was, not only to clean the site, but also to promote Greece’s cultural heritage, the resort said in an announcement.

The Creta Maris Green Team is working towards increasing the environmental awareness of the residents and visitors of Crete. Its environmental activities include the cleaning of beaches and public areas and the planting of trees.

The archaeological site of Kastri is among the area’s main sites of attraction. During the Hellenistic period the temple of goddess Artemis-Vritomartis was built, while the area also included a cemetery.

The building collapsed during the earthquake of 365 A.D and after 448 A.D. an early Christian basilica was built. Pottery and other findings indicate that the area was in use until the end of the 8th century.

The Creta Maris Beach Resort is part of Metaxas’ Group of Companies and has been operating since 1975. It has a capacity of 680 rooms, suites and bungalows and includes six restaurants, seven bars, seven swimming pools, a gym, the Hammam spa, the “Asterias” Children’s Club and various spaces for outdoor and indoor activities.
