SEGAS, Attica Region Team Up to Promote Fitness, Sports Tourism

Encouraging mass participation in sports and promoting Attica as a major sports tourism destination are at the center of an agreement between the Hellenic Amateur Athletic Association (SEGAS) and the Attica Region signed last week by Attica Governor Rena Dourou and SEGAS President Kostas Panagopoulos.

The two sides are aiming through the pact to develop an integrated program that will include sports activities which will also serve to attract wellness and fitness tourism to the region encouraging in the meantime healthier habits and lifestyles particularly for children.

Programs targeted at youngsters include “Kids Athletics” at Pedion tou Areos Park in September and the “Get to Know the Track” program to be implemented as of 2018. In the meantime, SEGAS and regional authorities are also planning to submit a request to UNESCO to include the Athens Marathon in its World Heritage List. 

“The Attica Region and SEGAS have made a decision: to strengthen sport, to promote mass participation and to further promote Attica as a sports, cultural and tourist destination,” said Dourou during a press conference, adding that the region’s cooperation with SEGAS “marks a partnership that will work to promote a growth model based on sports and tourism”.

“The cooperation between the Region of Attica and SEGAS is based on our common understanding that sport is not only a social utility and a passport to improved health and a better life, but also a powerful vehicle for the promotion of Attica across the globe and the development of sport tourism,” said Panagopoulos.
