The TILOS project, a biomass boiler in rural Slovakia, a home energy saving kit in Ireland, and an energy-efficient district heating and cooling system for 66 municipalities in 15 EU countries have been selected by expert judges as winners of the Energy Islands, Businesses, Consumers and Public Sector categories of the EU Sustainable Energy Awards, presented on Tuesday, by European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete at a ceremony in Brussels. The TILOS project was shortlisted among 12 nominees in the EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2017 that recognise innovation in energy efficiency and renewables. The TILOS project aims to facilitate the Dodecanese island’s access to renewable energy, sending out a strong message that alternative, community-level schemes fostering energy storage are becoming a viable reality and a way to address energy security for the islands, the judges explained as to the reasoning behind their decision.
