Destinations news EU Funds Breathe Life into South Aegean Region by GTP editing team 26 June 2017 written by GTP editing team 26 June 2017 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 7 Working towards ensuring sustainable development, product diversification and a brand name are among the priorities of the South Aegean Region, while aiming to establish the region as a global tourism destination, South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hadjimarkos said last week speaking at a “Europe In My Region” event held on the Cycladic island of Syros. Underlining that the region relies on EU funds to meets its goals, Hadjimarkos referred to the South Aegean operational program — a budget of 168.2 million euros — within the 2014-2020 NSRF funding framework, allocation of which began last year. Actions funded and completed thus far include the construction of 15 water supply networks and desalination projects; the upgrade of health and welfare infrastructure; restoration and preservation of three archaeological sites/museums; the improvement of port facility security; road construction projects and the creation of 13 community centers. At the same time, Hadjimarkos also referred to NSRF funding for the 2007 – 2013 period which included 156 works and projects with a budget of 236 million euros – among them an improved road network, port infrastructure upgrades and the restoration of archaeological landmarks. “The projects implemented on our islands thus far through NSRF programs are evidence of what we are capable of achieving when we work with a vision, a plan and dedication; when we respect and effectively put to use the resources of the European taxpayer,” Hadjimarkos said. Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura recently praised the South Aegean Region for achieving significant results in tourism in the last two years. The “Europe in My Region” campaign encourages EU residents to discover European projects near them.
