In an effort to showcase its cultural traditions, the island of Folegandros in the Cyclades this summer is organizing a series of local festivals — the so-called “panigiria” in Greek — and is inviting residents and visitors to join the celebrations.

Starting on July 16 and until October 19 the narrow alleys of Chora, the Castle, the town of Ano Meria and the port of Karavostasis will host a number of events with local food and spirits and traditional music.

Among the island’s main festivals is the celebration for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary on August 15.

Deriving from the Greek word “panigiris”, which means “gathering”, the “panigiria” are open air local festivals organized in Greece on the occasion of a national or a religious holiday.

The Folegandros festivals are organized by the Folegandros Municipality in collaboration with the South Aegean Region, the Folegandros Hoteliers Association, the Women’s Cultural Association of Folegandros, the island’s entrepreneurs and volunteers.
