WiFi at 20 Archaeological Sites and Museums in Greece

Twenty of the most popular archaeological sites and museums in Greece will gradually gain access to advanced broadband service, following the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Culture Ministry and Greek mobile network operator Cosmote.

According to an announcement, this summer the public will have access to free wireless Internet (WiFi) when they visit the  Akrotiri on Santorini, Delphi and Delos. The Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens and the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes already offer WiFi access. Cosmote will soon add offer WiFi at the Acropolis of Athens.

An investment of more than two million euros by Cosmote, the provision of the advanced broadband service aims to highlight the Greek cultural heritage with the power of technology. The project includes the study, design and development of a wireless broadband Internet network in areas selected by the Culture Ministry, the necessary equipment, operation and maintenance of networks and the free provision of wireless WiFi Internet services for three years.

Cosmote plans to add WiFi service at Knossos on Crete, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the Royal Tombs of Aigai-Vergina, the National Archaeological Museum, Ancient Olympia, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion on Crete, the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, the Acropolis of Lindos on Rhodes, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Spinalonga, the Museum of Byzantine Culture, Ancient Dodoni and Ancient Corinth.

Among other things, the WiFi service is expected to assist archaeological sites and museums develop new interactive ways of guiding and presenting their exhibits.

The museums and sites to offer WiFi to visitors were selected by the Greek Culture Ministry based on popularity and visitation figures.
