More specifically, 81 new units opened their doors in 2012, of which 14 in Kos, Heraklion, Chania, Trikala, Rhodes, Rethymnon, Pieria, Messinia, Argolida and Ioannina, offering luxury accommodation. The year 2015 saw 114 new players, 16 of which rated five-star in Mykonos, Chania, Halkidiki, Messinia, Lakonia, Corfu, Ioannina, Heraklion and Zakynthos. Overall, between 2012 and 2016, more than 10 percent of the new units were five-star and another 83 four-star. Meanwhile, according to findings by the Institute for Tourism Research and Forecasts (ITEP), in the 2008-2016 period a total of 1,428 new hotels opened with a total capacity of 46,594 rooms. Most new hotels opened in the South Aegean Region (23 percent), on Crete (14 percent) and in the Peloponnese (12 percent).
