Tinos Island

The island of Tinos in the Cyclades and its significance as a pilgrimage destination will be featured on a TV show of the Romanian public broadcaster TVR.

The TVR crew will visit the island between August 14 and 18 to film the events for the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, as thousands of people from Greece and abroad visit the island’s Panagia Evangelistria Cathedral on August 15. The Cathedral is home to an icon of Virgin Mary, which was discovered underground in 1823 and is believed to be the source of numerous miracles.

The feature will be presented in a special episode of TVR2, which is among Romania’s most popular TV channels with significant viewing rates. The channel presents high-quality programs, which focus on culture, tourism and entertainment, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) said in an announcement. Furthermore, several videos of Tinos will be featured on other TV shows.

As 90 percent of Romanians are Orthodox Christians, their interest on Tinos is great, while Romanian tour operators also look into other Greek pilgrimage destinations.

The familiarization (fam) trip on Tinos was organized upon the initiative of the Office of the Greek National Tourism Organization in Romania and approved by the GNTO Secretary General Konstantinos Tsegas.

Furthermore, the Organization announced that on August 20-22 it will host a journalist of the German newspaper “Der Tagesspiegel”, who is set to write a feature on Athens.

Moreover, as part of a cruise, six Austrian journalists between August 29 and September 3 will visit Athens, Hydra and Mykonos. They represent the “Krone Zeitung, “Kurier” and “Die Presse” newspapers;  the “Oe24” web and TV network which has 4,000,000 viewers and the “Hin und Weg” magazine, an announcement said.
