Athens Beefs Up Public Space Checks

The Municipality of Athens is intensifying its on-the-spot checks of food & beverages businesses in efforts to ensure regulations are being adhered to with regards to cleanliness and noise levels.

Specifically, municipal authorities conducted 2,491 inspections from January to June at cafes and restaurants, 517 at city kiosks, 111 at shops, and proceeded with noise level checks at 97 clubs and bars. To date, 79 clubs were penalized for violating the city’s noise ordinance while 57,000 euros in fines were issued to 178 businesses for hygiene offenses.

Indicatively, putting up posters illegally comes with a fine of 2,000 euros, distributing flyers at 500 euros, the prevention of garbage collection services due to illegally parked vehicle at 100 euros, abandoned vehicles at 500 euros.

This year Athens ranks among the top 5 Best European Destinations, according to the European Best Destinations (EBD) website.
