Greece-bound Tourists from Russia, US and Germany Spend More in June

June saw the number of international arrivals and the corresponding revenues rise by 13 percent and 14.2 percent respectively year-on-year, the Bank of Greece said on Monday, with Russian, US and German holiday-makers spending more on their travels.

Specifically, revenue from incoming EU residents rose by 10.5 percent to 1,401 million euros in June with receipts from France up by 14.2 percent to 109 million euros, from Germany by 16.3 percent to 347 million euros and from the UK by 8.5 percent to 378 million euros.

Spending by travelers outside the EU also increased by 26.6 percent in June, with the Russians being the month’s top spenders, up by 20.3 percent to 74 million euros followed by the Americans by 33.6 percent to 110 million euros.

For the January-June period, travel revenue grew by 7.1 percent year-on-year to 4,114 million euros with EU nationals spending 8.0 percent more to 2,685 million euros and non-EU travelers by an additional 6.2 percent to 1,265 million euros.

Expenditure by euro area vacationers rose by 14.4 percent to 1,696 million euros. The French increased spending by 17.3 percent to 277 million euros, the Germans by 15.4 percent to 688 million euros and the British by 4.6 percent to 630 million euros.

However, non-euro area travelers spent less in the first six months of the year, down by 1.5 percent to 989 million euros.

Meanwhile, the number of visitors in June rose by 13.0 percent year-on-year to 3,356,000. Overall, travelers from Russia rose by 36.6 percent to 109,000, from the US by 34.6 percent to 124,000 and from Germany by 14.6 percent to 457,000

In January-June 2017, the number of inbound visitors rose by 6.6 percent to 7,941,000.
