Greek shipowners control 23.2 percent of the world’s total fleet, with the industry employing over 200,000 people. The Greek fleet grew by 1,856 ships – 437 cargo ships, 530 tankers, 640 passenger vessels and 249 others – against 1,840 vessels in June 2016 with gross tonnage increased by 0.9 percent compared to 1.2 percent in June 2016. Greek shipowners invested approximately 2.36 billion dollars in the first four months of the year, with a total of 115 vessels worth 1.379 billion dollars coming into Greek hands, 18 of which were tankers, 66 bulkers, 28 container ships, one LNG gas carrier and additional vessel.
