Event News Creta Maris Makes ‘Sykopitarides’, Promotes Cretan Gastronomy by GTP editing team 1 September 2017 written by GTP editing team 1 September 2017 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 6 The Creta Maris Beach Resort and the “We do local” initiative recently held a gastronomy event in Hersonissos, on the island of Crete, to unveil to their guests the “secrets” of a traditional local summer recipe, the “sykοpitarides”. The event took place on the resort’s premises, where visitors and staff learned how to prepare the recipe. The sykοpitarides are small balls made of compressed dried figs. Guests and staff first gathered at the resort’s gardens, where they collected figs and brought them to the resort’s organic field. They then made the “sykopitarides” under the guidance of Theano Metaxa. As she said sykopitarides is one of the island’s most popular traditional Cretan snacks. “People used to make them in the past and today, there are still some people who insist on reviving the traditional recipe… The process is time consuming, but enjoyable and easy,” she underlined. The event brought guests closer the rich Cretan gastronomic tradition and provided them with the opportunity to try a dessert, which offers the authentic experience of Crete, the locals and the Cretan products, the Creta Maris Beach Resort said in an announcement. “We do local” is a project first launched by local entrepreneurs on the island of Crete, in cooperation with the certification control body Cosmocert and Local Food Experts. The initiative has expanded to other locations in Greece and today counts 28 certified members. Creta Maris Beach Resort belongs to the Metaxas Group of Companies and has been operating since 1975. It has a capacity of 680 rooms, suites and bungalows and includes six restaurants, seven bars, seven swimming pools, a gym, a Hammam spa, the Asterias Children’s Club and a great space for outdoor and indoor activities.
