Karpathos was presented on TourNatur’s “Live Stage” alongside other destinations in Austria, Germany and Spain and organizations, which offer well-established alternative tourism products. Municipal councilor and member of the island’s tourism committee, Fotini Frangou, presented the island’s long network of trails that counts more than 30 routes of many kilometers that cover the whole destination and includes signs for the convenience of visitors. According to the South Aegean Region, many of the trails were created hundreds of years ago and connect villages, settlements and beaches. Some of them, especially in the northern part of the island, are marked with stone walls and lead to areas of outstanding natural beauty such as Tristomo and Vroukounta, which are not accessible by a vehicle. The presentation of Karpathos was part of the Region’s three-year plan to promote alternative forms of tourism, aiming to attract visitors with specific interests, thus extend the tourism season. Karpathos was selected by the tourism directorate of the South Aegean Region to represent Greece, along with nine other destinations of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. The alternative forms of tourism of all islands were presented at the region’s stand. Sifnos represented the Aegean islands on the “Live Stage” of TourNatur in 2016. In its 14th year, the TourNatur expo hosted some 5,000 travel destinations from around the world and 275 exhibitors.
