A far-reaching promotional strategy for autumn holidays in Greece as well as turmoil and insecurity in rival markets has led to high demand which in turn has boosted prices. According to Trivago findings for online hotel booking rates, a single night in a double room in Greece this month has increased by 22 percent on average, going online for 132 euros compared to 108 euros in September 2016. The average rate for a night’s stay in Athens rose by 13 percent at 122 euros per night against 108 euros in the same month last year. Other leading rival destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Italy have also seen hotel rates rise above those in Greece at 149 euros, 136 euros and 135 euros respectively. Meanwhile, accommodation prices dropped in Cyprus at 113 euros and Turkey at 77 euros for a night’s stay. According to the same data, among 24 European countries monitored by Trivago, the highest online hotel rates for September were recorded in Denmark at 197 euros per night, Switzerland at 195 euros and the Netherlands at 171 euros. The lowest prices were in Bulgaria at 50 euros a night, Russia at 57 euros and Romania at 61 euros.
