Athens International Airport (AIA) “Eleftherios Venizelos” was honored as a “Merit Winner” for its “Internet of (noisy) Things” application at the WITSA 2017 Global ICT Excellence Awards recently held in Taipei, Taiwan.

The awards of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) recognize the entities that made the most significant contributions to mankind in 2017. The ceremony was held within the framework of the 2017 World Congress on Information Technology held by WITSA.

AIA was honored in the “Digital Opportunity Award” category for the application that sees to reduce airport noise. The app was developed in collaboration with technology company Ex Machina.

“We are very pleased that an innovative application of AIA’s “The Digital Gate” program has received such an important distinction… Through the program we encourage young people to develop innovative ideas and solutions, that could be applied in a real airport environment,” said George Dimitriadis, director of AIA’s IT&T business unit.

“This innovative application of improvement and decision-making in regards to airport noise, developed by Ex Machina, is an example of how digitalization and innovation have become our main priorities… in order to be able to offer a unique experience to our customers, travelers, visitors and associates,” he added.

AIA was among the six Greek nominations submitted by the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology and Communications Enterprises (SEPE).

WITSA is the leading recognized international voice of the global ICT industry, whose members from over 80 countries and economies represent more than 90 percent of the world ICT market.
