Aiming to establish Santorini as a sustainable tourism destination, the Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa recently held a major cleanup operation at the island’s harbor and on the beach of Baxedes in Oia.

Volunteers and staff worked over a coastline of 700 meters and filled a total of 24 bags with garbage, including plastic bottles, bags, bottle caps, straws, aluminum cans and cigarette filters.

“The initiative was inspired by the Travel.Enjoy.Respect campaign of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the designation of 2017 as the ‘International Year of Sustainable Tourism’,” Santo Maris Oia said in an announcement.

It was also conducted within the framework of the International Coastal Cleanup Day, one of the most significant global volunteer efforts for the conservation of the marine environment, organized annually by the Ocean Conservancy and coordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association.

The main priority of the Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa was to remove the rubbish and raise awareness on environmental issues among its employees and the local society.

A newly built establishment, the Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa opened its doors in 2016. It is the newest addition to the Metaxas Group of Companies, which has been operating in the tourism sector since 1975. Located in a privileged setting at the edge of the caldera, Santo Maris Oia offers seclusion and a stunning view of the world-famous Santorini sunset. It includes 44 suites and villas, four outdoor swimming pools, a luxury Spa with an indoor swimming pool and the Alios Ilios restaurant.
