Greece Moves Up US Agenda, Tsipras to Meet Trump in Washington

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is tentatively scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump on October 17 during his official visit to Washington, where he is expected to discuss regional security, defense and terrorism as well as the issue of the Souda naval base on Crete.

Tsipras accepted Trump’s invitation to the White House where he will hold parallel meetings with US government officials. The two leaders are set to also focus on bilateral issues, the refugee crisis as well as investments and collaborations in the field of energy.

Greece’s major geopolitical role has led to increased interest by the US government as demonstrated by the fact that Tsipras is the only Greek head of state to have met two US presidents in less than a year. Tsipras met with former US President Barak Obama in November 2016.

The two countries are partners in economy and trade, education, science and innovation and humanitarian response, among others.
