The main objectives of the European “Blueislands” environmental project and its results so far will be presented on Tuesday, October 24, during a conference to be held by the Region of Crete in Heraklio.

The conference on the island of Crete is addressed to organizations and enterprises active in tourism, waste management and the environment.

The “Blueislands” project, which is part of the Interreg MED program, aims to identify, address and mitigate the effect of the seasonal variation of waste generated on the Mediterranean islands during the summer months, as an effect of increased tourism.

“With 14 organizations from eight Mediterranean countries participating, the project focuses on the islands that are confronted with common challenges, where tourism is a basic pillar of the economy, also affecting the environment,” the Region of Crete said in an announcement.

The goal is for a policy “tool” to be delivered, encompassing action plans which will be implemented on a regional and local lever for a sustainable tourism development. Through the exchange of knowledge and experiences, the project will create new means for the education of all interested parties, including tour operators, hotels, municipalities and other organizations.

The “Blueislands” program includes field work, research and the submission of proposals by all partners. It is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund until September 2019.
