Popular Athens hang-out Agia Eirini Square will be undergoing an overhaul starting Thursday as part of the municipality of Athens“Revitalization of the Athens Commercial Triangle” program launched earlier this year.

City authorities will remove parked vehicles from the area, clear graffiti, clean up waste, free up public space and limit cafe/restaurant seating, repair benches, enhance green spaces and clear building facades on Vassiliki, Lombona and Skouze streets.

The program, which aims to transform Athens’ commercial center into a functional model with regulated public space, parking and vehicle traffic, catering hours and waste management, is made possible with the support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) in collaboration with Athens Partnership.

Since the project’s launch, Vissis, Kairi, Agathonos, Polykleitou, Vlachava, Chrysospiliotissis, Nikiou, Avramioti and Karoris sts – all in the center of Athens – have been pedestrianized.

Meanwhile, walls are also being cleaned throughout Athens’ commercial center, while four disused buildings have been revamped and opened for public use.

At the same time, within the municipality’s innovative “Art on the KAFAO” project, artists are invited to transform telephone utility boxes into art works.
