During 2017, key indicators of Greek tourism – arrivals and revenue – retained a positive course showing the industry’s strength and potential.

According to a recent study, hotels account for some 10% of GDP and 6.5% of employment in Greece, while tourism contributes more than 18.6% to the Greek economy.

The direct and indirect contribution of Greek hotels to tourism revenues are expected to exceed 17 billion euros this year, which corresponds to 52% of the national tourism revenues. Greek tourism, directly and indirectly, contributes 23.4% to total national employment.

Furthermore, according to international guest satisfaction surveys, Greek hotels have again verified the exceptional level of services they offer to their clients, standing high among competition, while more and more of them are winning international awards of prestige and excellence.

It goes without saying that tourism is vital to our country’s economy. It brings growth; it creates jobs; generates and distributes income to a larger spectrum of businesses and professions.

Tourism is an important asset for boosting the national economy and local communities and today, more than ever, we need to pay more attention in order to protect our tourism product and infrastructure in the most efficient way.

Towards this goal, Greek hotels have always played and will continue to play a catalytic and decisive role. In return, the state should fulfill its commitment to address the difficulties and problems that hotel businesses continue to face and to provide a friendly and stable business environment, encouraging investment and competitiveness.

*Due to upcoming elections, this year’s official tourism message was sent to GTP on behalf of the Hellenic Federation of Hoteliers.
