Photo Source: Municipality of Kalymnos Hoteliers on the island of Kalymnos were recently introduced to the “Greek Breakfast” initiative during an event that included the presentation of proposed hotel breakfast menus based on local products and traditional recipes. Since the launch of the initiative in 2010 by the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH), hundreds of hoteliers across Greece have incorporated local products into their morning offerings, promoting local gastronomic traditions, also paving the way for financial benefits for local communities. The aim of the initiative is to promote each Greek destination’s local gastronomy. The event, entitled “Greek Breakfast of Kalymnos”, opened with the presentation of the initiative by the president of the Kalymnos Hoteliers Association, Nikolaos Tsagaris. Giorgos Pittas, representative of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels and supervisor of the “Greek Breakfast” initiative, also underlined the importance of promoting the island’s gastronomy through hotel breakfast menus. Guests at the event then had the chance to sample proposed breakfast menus, based on local products: thyme honey, pastries – including the “Eptazymo” local bread offered after church services, dairy products, smoked seafood and fish, citrus products and the sun-dried “Anama” wine from the Vathy valley, herbal essences and many other local traditional delicacies. The Lyceum Club of Women of Kalymnos opened the presentation with a traditional “welcome” song and presented the local ritual of the offering of wedding gifts from the mother-in-law to the bride. The “Greek Breakfast of Kalymnos” event was held under the joint organization of the Kalymnos Hoteliers Association, the island’s Rented Rooms and Apartments Owners Association, AlterNet Kalymnos and local agricultural organizations and was attended by local officials and representatives of the island’s tourism organizations and enterprises.
