According to the secretary general, the re-opening of the Athens Tourist Guide School, the renewal of curricula at both tourism schools of higher education ASTER (Crete and Rhodes) and the eight public Institutes of Vocational Training (IEK), the digital upgrade of educational programs and the launch of training programs for the unemployed and seasonal workers are amongthe ministry’s main priorities regarding tourism education in Greece. Among the ministry’s priorities — besides the design and implementation of upgraded educational and training programs — are fostering synergies between the public and private sectors as well as focusing on the tourism development of regional destinations. “We have established excellent cooperation with regional government authorities, tourist bodies and local communities on priority issues and opportunities in tourism development,” Kourneta said, adding that “the tourism ministry encourages and supports every effort and initiative, public or private, that focuses on tourism education and the upgrade of the Greek tourism industry”. Launched in 2014 in the city of Kalamata, the Kalamata Tourism School is a three-day initiative organizing seminars on tourism industry issues and trends.
