Malta President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca on Thursday requested a cooperation with Greece to launch joint actions to boost tourism demand in the Mediterranean.

Preca made her request during a meeting with Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura on the sidelines of the Women Political Leaders Annual Global Summit (WPL) 2017 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

On her part, Minister Kountoura underlined that Greece supports and encourages actions aimed at increasing tourism in the Mediterranean and creating new prospects and growth in the economies of the Mediterranean countries.

Furthermore, Kountoura accepted the invitation of Preca to visit Valletta in early March 2018 and take part in the preparatory meeting of the Mediterranean Tourism Foundation (MTF), of which the President of Malta is a Patron.

The MTF was established by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) in Malta in 2013. It is a non profit, non-governmental organisation aiming at increasing the potential for sustainable tourism growth across the Mediterranean region.

In July, the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) appointed President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca as a special ambassador for the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
