Photo © NikD90 / Shutterstock The Municipality of Thira on Tuesday, December 12, will hold its fourth annual meeting in Athens, which this year will feature the archaeological site of Akrotiri on Santorini. Titled, “50 years Akrotiri – Projects and perspectives in the field of culture”, the meeting marks the 50th anniversary since excavations started in 1967 by archaeologist Spyros Marinatos. The event will be held at noon at the Acropolis Museum. The Mayor of Thira Nikos Zorzos will offer information on the island’s current status and the municipality’s plans and activities for the years to come. Furthermore, the director of excavations at Akrotiri Christos Doumas will speak on the latest developments, while Cyclades Ephorate of Antiquities director Dimitris Athanasoulis will refer to the projects implemented on the monuments and museums of Santorini. Furthermore, Stavros Benos, president of the Diazoma cultural association will speak on ways of promoting the island’s cultural features. Also attending will be Grigoris Zarifopoulos, country manager Google for Greece, Cyprus and Malta, who will present Google’s “Grow Greek Tourism” initiative and the company’s collaboration with the municipality of Thira to support the “Santorini Year Round Destination” iniative, which aims at tackling overtourism during the summer months.
