According to data released recently by AIA, this growth was driven mainly by the strong increase of international arrivals by 12 percent, reaching 14.41 million in 2017 compared to 12.86 million in 2016. Furthermore, domestic arrivals slightly increased by 2.4 percent and reached 7.32 million, mainly due to capacity reduction during the winter period. In December, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 1.43 million, showing an increase of 5.5 percent, compared to the same month in 2016. The international market enjoyed a sharp increase of 13 percent, while capacity reduction in specific domestic routes resulted in a 7.6 percent decrease in the domestic passenger traffic. October 2017 was the busiest month for AIA with overall passenger traffic reaching 2 million, up by 15.4 percent.
