Pioneering Greeks: Konstantinos Machairas, Director of Organization Earth

Welcome to “Pioneering Greeks”, the column of GTP Headlines, which highlights the Greeks that stand out for their creative thinking in the business world. “Pioneering Greeks” is a collaboration between LoveGreece.com and Greek Travel Pages (GTP).

This week we introduce Konstantinos Machairas, director of Organization Earth, a Greek non-profit NGO with a mission to develop a concept of environmental and social intelligence, by providing experiential non-formal education for sustainable development to all.

Organization Earth is the result of the concern of restless fellow citizens regarding social and environmental issues. It was established in 2010, in an attempt to offer experiential education, especially to citizens, also realizing that the most serious issues emerge from the way that people have chosen to live in large urban centers.

The main activities of Organization Earth consist of three initiatives: First is “The Center of the Earth”, which is located in Ilion next to the Tritsis Park. “The Center of the Earth” started its operation in 2012 as a center of environmental education for the young and the elderly.

“Aephoria”, the second initiative of Organization Earth, is a business educational program, which focuses on sustainability, the social and environmental impact of economic activities.

The third and most recent initiative is the “Earth” refugee program. It has emerged from the need of society to confront the issue of the recent migratory flows in Greece and in Europe, and offers recreational, educational, pedagogical and sports programs in an attempt to achieve smooth integration and a harmonious coexistence.

Donations and partnerships with foundations and other organizations are the financial sources for the implementation of these programs. However, most significant is the support and the voluntary participation of the people.

The global goals for sustainable development, as presented by the United Nations in the end of 2015, are perhaps the most promising and the most ambitious common objectives for all mankind.

Based on these principles, Organization Earth is working towards the creation of a prosperous Greek society and an economy, which will have finally accepted that the planet’s natural resources are not inexhaustible. Respect and the right to use the country’s greatest wealth, which is biodiversity, will not only generate growth; it will also create a better tomorrow for all.

Inspired by the dynamism and creativity of the Greek entrepreneurial spirit, LoveGreece was founded in 2013 as an initiative to boost and promote the country’s image abroad by profiling talented and successful Greeks. With their ethos and vision, Greece’s entrepreneurs and professionals are an important aspect of the country worth highlighting to the world. LoveGreece is powered by Gina Mamidaki, the founder of the G & A Mamidakis Foundation.
