Getting from Athens International Airport to the port of Piraeus, set to facilitate tourists seeking to travel to the islands, will as of February take approximately an hour thanks to the launch of the electric (EMU) train line.

In its initial phase, Piraeus will operate as the main depot for the country’s suburban rail services, also linking Piraeus directly with Kiato in the Peloponnese, Chalkida in Evia, and the airport.

Test runs were completed and as of February 1, the operating company is ready to set the train into motion adding to Athens mass transport system which already includes the metro, the urban railway (ISAP), trolleys, trams and buses.

At the same time, the Athens – airport service will run every 15 to 20 minutes. It currently runs every hour.

The ticket fare for inner-city travel is set at 1.40 euros with a duration of 90 minutes. The operating company said it plans to add the new railway services to its smart card validation system.

Tourism professionals view the launch as a very significant move as it will allow passengers to reach Athens directly, and from there to the port in less than an hour, paving the way for cruise travel to expand.
