The Municipality of Kozani announced this week that it has approved a long-term strategy aiming to promote the northern Greek city and surrounding region as a top travel destination.

The decision came after Institute SETE (InSETE) data revealed a drop in international and domestic tourist arrivals.

Besides the rebranding of the Kozani and the promotion of its tourism offerings, the plan aims to reach out to new markets. More specifically, to attract vacationers from neighboring regions and from Thessaloniki, individual travelers as well as tour operators; to launch one- or two-day school or university trips; to organize conference and business travel events; to offer attractive adventure and alternative travel products including trekking and skiing.

Kozani authorities are also examining ways to tap into the city’s gastronomy, culture and history in order to offer city break travel options which could include events, sites and monuments as well as theme-oriented trips on the Greek Enlightenment, ancient history and the Macedonian Struggle. These could include, among others, visits to the Municipal Library of Kozani, the “Kovendareios”, the country’s second largest with over 150,000 books, rare publications and valuable documents.

Topping the municipality’s agenda are the creation of a new city logo, drawing up a business plan complete with actions, timeframes and budgets, and promoting alternative forms of tourism, local farming products and the city’s cultural heritage.
